Buying a used gyroplane without inheriting a hidden problem
What to read in the logbooks, what to look at on the airframe, and the questions that separate a maintained aircraft from a tidy one.

A used gyroplane can be an excellent buy or an expensive education, and the difference is usually visible before you hand over money. Not in the paint. In the paperwork, and in a handful of places on the airframe that reward a careful look.
This is a guide to what to check and what to ask. It is not a substitute for a pre purchase inspection by somebody competent on the type, and if you take one thing from it, take that.
Start with the registration, because it decides the rules
Before you look at the aircraft, find out how it is registered. In the United States a gyroplane you are shown might be a factory built certificated aircraft, an experimental amateur built one, an experimental light sport aircraft, or in the case of some very light single seaters, operated as an ultralight vehicle under 14 CFR Part 103.
This is not a technicality. It governs who may maintain it, what inspections it needs, whether you may legally carry a passenger, and what you are allowed to change. Two aircraft that look identical can sit in different categories with different obligations attached.
Establish these before you travel to see it
- How it is registered, and whether the registration is current.
- Whether the aircraft matches its paperwork, by serial number.
- Total time on the airframe, the engine, and the rotor blades separately.
- Whether blade and rotor head documentation exists at all.
- Who has been maintaining it, and under what authority.
Logbooks tell you about the owner, not just the aircraft
Read them for continuity, not for polish. Gaps matter. An aircraft with detailed entries for six years, then nothing for three, then a tidy recent entry, is telling you a story worth asking about. So is an aircraft that has changed hands three times in two years.
Look for the boring entries. Somebody who records a bearing replacement, a cable adjustment and a tyre change is somebody who was paying attention. Logbooks that contain only annual inspections and nothing between them describe an aircraft that either flew very little or was maintained off the books.
Rotor blades deserve their own attention. Blades are a life limited or inspection driven item depending on the manufacturer, and blades without traceable history are an unknown you are buying. Ask for the blade documentation by name, and treat its absence as a price conversation.

The amateur built question
An experimental amateur built gyroplane is not automatically a worse aircraft. Some are built to a standard a factory would be pleased with. Others are not, and the variation is much wider than in factory production.
What you are assessing is the builder as much as the machine. Ask who built it, whether they are contactable, whether the build documentation exists, and whether it was built from a current kit or assembled from parts. An aircraft whose builder is reachable and happy to talk is a considerably better prospect than one with an anonymous history.
The common failure point is a buyer who inspects the aircraft carefully and never asks who is going to maintain it afterwards. Find that person before you buy, and ask them to look at it. If nobody within reach will work on the type, that is information about your next five years of ownership.
Flying it before you buy
Do not fly an unfamiliar gyroplane yourself as part of a purchase decision unless you are current on the type. Arrange for an instructor who knows it to fly it, ideally with you, and to tell you what they notice. Pay them. It is the cheapest part of the transaction and the most likely to save you money.
Things worth asking them to assess specifically: how the aircraft behaves on power changes, whether the rotor runs smoothly through the speed range, how the prerotator engages, and whether anything about the ground handling feels unusual.
Common questions
Is a high airframe time a problem?
Not by itself. An aircraft that has flown regularly and been maintained is frequently a better buy than one that sat in a barn for eight years. Sitting still is hard on seals, hoses, fuel systems, tyres and batteries, and corrosion does not need the aircraft to be moving.
Should I buy a project?
Only if you want the project. Half finished aircraft are cheap for a reason, and completing somebody else work means inheriting decisions you cannot inspect and paperwork you may not be able to reconstruct. If your goal is to fly this season, buy something that flies.
What paperwork should come with it?
Registration, airworthiness documentation appropriate to how it is registered, airframe and engine logbooks, rotor blade documentation, the manufacturer manuals, and any weight and balance record. Missing items are not automatically disqualifying but each one is a negotiating point and a future cost.
Where should I look for aircraft?
Listings, dealers, and word of mouth through instructors, who often know which aircraft in their area are well kept before those aircraft are advertised. Our own marketplace is free to browse and free to list on, and no membership is needed for either.
Who should do the pre purchase inspection?
Somebody who knows the type and has no financial interest in the sale. Not the seller's friend, and not the shop that has been signing its inspections for years without ever being questioned. If the only person available on the type is the one who maintained it, get them to walk you through the aircraft anyway, then have a second pair of eyes read the logbooks independently. Paying twice is cheaper than one surprise on the rotor head.
