Who is allowed to work on a gyroplane, and who actually can
Certificated, experimental and light-sport aircraft are maintained under different rules. What that means for finding somebody competent.

Who is allowed to work on your gyroplane depends on how it is registered, and the answer changes more than new owners expect. A factory built certificated aircraft, an experimental amateur built one, and a light sport aircraft sit under different maintenance rules, and the person qualified to sign for one may not be the right person for another.
This is orientation. The governing text is 14 CFR, principally Part 43 on maintenance and Part 91 on the operating rules that require inspections, plus the operating limitations issued for your specific aircraft. Read those, and read your own limitations document, because experimental aircraft carry conditions particular to that airframe.
The registration decides the rules

Two cautions about that table. It is deliberately broad, because the detail depends on your aircraft and your certificates. And the repairman certificate that an amateur builder can hold is tied to that individual and that aircraft, so it does not transfer when the aircraft is sold. Buyers are frequently surprised by this: the person who could sign the condition inspection was the builder, and you are not them.
The practical problem is not the rules, it is the map
Most owners in this category do not struggle with what the regulation permits. They struggle to find anybody within a reasonable distance who has seen a gyroplane before, let alone the model they own.
A general aviation shop that maintains light aeroplanes may be entirely competent and still decline the work, because the rotor system is outside what they know and they would rather say so than guess. That is the right instinct and you should respect it. What it leaves you with is a search problem.
Find your maintenance before you need it
- Ask the dealer or manufacturer who they recommend in your region.
- Ask instructors, who know which shops actually touch these aircraft.
- Ask the owner community for the specific model, not gyroplanes in general.
- Confirm the shop will take the work before you buy the aircraft.
- Establish who orders rotor and prerotator parts, and how long they take.
Parts availability matters more than hourly rate
For most owners the binding constraint is not what a shop charges, it is whether the part exists and how long it takes to arrive. Several manufacturers in this category are outside the United States, so a component that is in stock is a very different proposition to one that is not.
Ask before you buy an aircraft: who supplies rotor blades for this model, who supplies prerotator components, and what a typical wait looks like. An aircraft with a healthy parts pipeline and a dealer network is worth real money over one where every component is a search.
Field note. Owners consistently report that the expensive lesson is not the invoice, it is the season lost waiting for a component while the aircraft occupied a hangar. Factor that in when comparing two aircraft on price.
Which trades you will actually need
Beyond the annual, the businesses gyroplane owners deal with are more varied than people assume. Rotor and airframe work is the obvious one. Also common: engine overhaul and support, propeller repair and balancing, avionics and instrument fitting, upholstery and canopy work, painting, trailer and ground handling equipment, transport and rigging when an aircraft moves, and insurance and finance that understands what the aircraft is.
That last point is not a throwaway. Insurers and lenders unfamiliar with the category sometimes price it as if it were a helicopter, or decline it because the underwriter has no reference for it. Finding a broker who has written this business before saves a great deal of explaining.
Building the map is part of what the association is for
A scattered industry with no directory means every owner solves the same search problem alone, and every good shop stays invisible to the people who need it. That is one of the reasons the association carries a Vendor membership for businesses that service the industry, and why the directories stay free to search whether a business joins or not.
A vendor entry says what a business does and which aircraft it works on. It is not an endorsement, we do not inspect shops, and no fee changes that. What it does is make a competent business findable.
Common questions
Can I do my own maintenance?
It depends on the registration and on what the task is. Owners of certificated aircraft may perform a defined list of preventive maintenance. Experimental amateur built aircraft allow considerably more latitude, and a builder holding the repairman certificate for that aircraft can sign its condition inspection. Check your own operating limitations, not a general answer, including this one.
Does an annual on a gyroplane cost more than on a light aeroplane?
We do not publish a figure, because it depends on the aircraft, the rotor system, the region and what the inspection finds. Ask two shops in your area for their rate and what a typical inspection involves on your model.
My builder held the repairman certificate. What happens now I own it?
It does not transfer with the aircraft. You will need an appropriately certificated person for the condition inspection, or to pursue the relevant certificate yourself where that is available. Work this out before the inspection is due, not the week it expires.
Are rotor blades on a calendar life?
That is set by the blade manufacturer, not by one rule across the category, and it may be expressed in hours, in calendar time, or by inspection criteria. Get the document for your specific blades.
